    Oliver,

    If it really is the original lacquer and it isn't all cracked and checked there is a good chance that a reasonable shine can be had by compounding and polishing the paint. Doing it by machine method would be best but unless you have experience in doing this it is best left to someone who does. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try.
