    C1 tachometer

Do you ever have to have a tachometer reworked? I removed my tach cable tonight and added lubricate to the cable . It looked brand new. When I started up the engine it still would not Rev over 4000 RPM. I know that the RPM is higher. After lubricating the cable, the tach showed a lower RPM then before when idleing. Someone told me it may have to be reworked. Is there anything else I can look for. I don't think the gears in the end of the generator are bad. I haven't tried taking it out and running it though the gears. When I reved it up in neutral it wouldn't go higher then 4000 RPM. I known this engine will rev 6000 RPM. It will develope around 325 HP according to the spec sheet run by the cam manufacturer. The tachometer does not have a steady reading. It will fluxuate excessively when idleing. I know that with this cam it won't have a steady idle. But it should read higher then 4000 RPM. When I gun it.

Check your local yellow pages for a speedometer repair shop. They will be able to repair and calibrate your tach. Keep in mind that your tach will not give an accurate reading if you don't have the correct pulley on the generator and on the crankshaft. As far as I know, there is only one set of gears for the tach drive unit.

Many folks think that because pre-75 Corvettes use a mechanical tachometer, that the tachs are direct drive (like many old racing car tachometers). However, Corvette tachs are NOT direct drive. They have a magnetic-type mechanism and they do require service from time-to-time.

Mine 62s tach did the same thing it would not go over 3000 rpm for a couple years then one foggy nite I was going thru the gears and it started spinning all the way around till it hit the stop pin and the needle fell off ,
that X-mas my wife gave me a new mechanism ,lens and face from zip products and
she said it was the last one they had after ordering it from 3 other places and none being available. This was about 4 years ago, I was told by someone that is the same unit as a jeep speedometer and my replacement did have a place for the odometer numbers and little gears to turn them.
        But works perfect.
        Good luck

D&M restoration service is a reputable place to send the gauge. They have ads posted in the NCRS catalogs. You may also want to check the gears in the tach drive unit on the generator. Lack of gear lube cause excessive wear on the larger of the two gears.
          Good Luck.
