Well, I saw another example of eBay foolishness. An NOS J-56 "twin pin" caliper (actually, a pair of caliper halves to make up a J-56 front caliper; caliper assemblies were never available from GM for 65-82 Corvettes) sold on eBay for $253.61 (eBay #2416551585). A few comments:
1) although this is an NOS caliper, an NOS caliper is not necessarily any better than a stainless steel sleeved original, used caliper. In fact, a lot of folks, myself included, would consider the stainless stel sleeved caliper to be superior;
2) as I have said on many previous occasions, a "twin-pin" J-56 caliper can be easily made from a standard caliper. The casting numbers for any given series of calipers (65-66, 67-~73, ~74-82) are the same. Simply machine off the pin bosses and drill the 1/8" pad pin holes. This is EXACTLY how Delco-Moraine made them in the first place. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE could discern a made-up caliper from an original;
3) now for the "clincher": the caliper halves purchased in this auction, although of the 67-~73 casting numbers, are a SERVICE-ONLY configuration of those pieces. They are NOT the same as the original PRODUCTION pieces. How are they different? Well, a guy's got to be allowed to have a few secrets.
