    '61 trunk section

I checked my weatherstripping around the trunk lid & found it to be attached with black cement/glue. I want to remove it. (NCRS TRUNK SECTION page 23; 2nd paragraph... attached with sloppy brush-applied dull yellow cement. Can anybody give some advice 'cause you have done it already, what's the best method #1- to remove the existing weatherstriping? #2 remove the existing black cement without too much damage to trunk lid paint #3 how to prep surface for new weatherstripping cement? #4 where to buy yellow cement acceptable for Flight juding and #5 where is best place to get best quality replacement weatherstripping for trunk lid? Thanks from a relatively new NCRS member #39024- trying to Top Flight my Trunk Section by myself before September Show.

to remove the weatherstriping go to a body and paint supply store and buy 3m's weather strip remover, they will also have the correct cement there also. this is a liquid that comes in a can and will not hurt your paint. do not use a putty knife unless you don't care about your paint. the remover has a tip on it so you can just squeeze out what you need. use a soft rag and keep working at it as it will take awhile. once you get it soft you can pull the weather strip off. any of the corvette suppliers will have the correct new weather strip. if you don't tare your old strip you can clean and reuse. when everything is cleaned up you can apply the cement to the trunk and weatherstrip. do not do this unless temps are above 65*. dry fit the weatherstrip so you know where to apply the cement. good luck.

Tom Maxwell in Maryland supplies the correct dull yellow cement in a can with brush at a reasonable price. What he has is much more correct than the 3M yellow weatherstrip cement.

Mike's advice is a worthy addition to this board. The 3-M is WAY too yellow. I got along pretty well with NAPA "clear"... Best, Dennis

Thanks for input- off to do some stripping...but first hav to remove trunk lid. They are correctly painted exterior body color and have washer head attachment bolts.BUT they do not have tooth lock-washers like on latch striker. Should they have them ? Should the actual bolts be painted over also or removed, cleaned and be bare metal ?

Thanks for input.. Got a contact phone # or e-mail address for Tom Maxwell? Start work this week after I get material. Hope removing washer head bolts and trunk lid isn't going to be a problem ! I will probably post more questions as I go through each paragraph in judging guide.. thanks again from a novice who just wants to learn more about my retirement gift I've had for three + years now.

John ..thanks for your input. As I mentioned to others with input, now time to get started and remove trunk lid to do weatherstripping removal. Do you know what is meant by " trunk hinges having additional (outboard) links? I gotta learn each new term one step at a time, one paragraph at a time. I can see how it will take me plenty of time, paragraph at a time ! But I love the challenge and the reward when each item is finished.

                Re: '61 trunk section

if the bolts seem real hard to turn try turning them back and fourth to loosen them up. this will keep them from breaking off.
