    Cleaning C2 soft top

The white top on my '64 convertible is in excellent shape but is starting to show dark lines where the top covers the frame. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best method to clean these dark lines?

    Thanks.

Westley's white wall cleaner and a stiff brush. Keep the car wet and flush often. The stuff can ruin your paint.

Mike...The wesley's could really mark the car. Most tire cleaners have the same ingrediants as oven cleaner!
I had a soft top for years and used household cleanser, Ajax or Javex, in the shaker can. You might try Vim, the cream cleanser. With them all, flush liberally with water. The A/J used to leave a white film if you let them dry on the paint.
      Hope that helps.....

back when these cars were new we always use kitchen cleanser to clean the tops, just keep the paint on the body wet. bon ami cleanser is a very mild version and i would try it first plus it is the best stuff for cleaning you windshield before putting on rain-X

Thank you to everyone for all the responses.

I used to use Ajax back in the 70s when I had a white soft top '63. It did work well. I was just wondering if there had been anything better since then. Sounds like the household cleanser is the easiest route.

          Thanks again.

            Mike,

I agree with the recommendation of Bon-Ami, Ajax etc; however, remember that all of these products are abrasives and use them sparingly and only as often as absolutely necessary. As the owner's manual states, mild soap and clear water used routinely should keep the top clean for the most part. As to paint spotting when using these, I make a 'slurry' of the powder with minimal water and do only a small section at a time before wiping it off with a very damp, but not dripping cloth (this prevents run-off over the paint). When doing the vertical parts around and at either side of the rear window, I lay double thick terrycloth towels below to catch any run-off or drips. When I'm all done, I wash the top with normal car wash soap and plenty of water to rinse away any remaining residue.

            Good luck,

            grant

              Mike,

Mothers makes a gell product just for convertable tops that works great and is not an abrasive. I used it on my original 71 top and it worked perfectly. I bought mime from Corvette Central, but auto stores should carry it as well.

word has it that dennis clark, the 61-2 team leader, prefers a powder , sold by the folks at Massengill Pharmaceutical, dissolved in apple cider vinegar, to remove offensive stains and secretions from his c-1 soft tops.DO NOT TRY HIS REMEDY on your cars as the paint will need some gyncologic attention. mike

Isn't it past your bed-time??? I have 4 hard top only cars. Don't know squat about cars that you can enter with a dull pocket knife.
