    C2 Stainless Restoration

Now that I have all of the stainless steel off of my 67 convertible I need to clean and polish. What should I use to clean it up without scratching it? Most of the hardware including the windshield pillar trim is without pitting. The soft top latches have very light pitting.

    Thanks,
    Jace Holt

0000 steel wool is great for cleaning without scratching. A good quality fine polishing compound will work well also.

For cleaning/polishing the stainless steel trim on my 68 and 70 I have used BRASSO with very good results.

I support following Mikes lead here. I bought a 8" buffing motor and supplies from Harbor Freight for around $75. This is some of the best money money I've ever spent.

You can buff stainless to a brillant shine with little effort. Small dings and dents can also be removed if you can reach the back side. Just tap the dents out, sand smooth with 320 grit and buff away the problem area.

          good luck,
          tc

            Jace:

There's a pretty good DIY book out there on "How to Restore Metal Trim". It worth the $20. As for the buffer, you don't need the $350 Baldour. What you do need is an 8" model with a decent motor and long arbor shafts.

I'm looking at a Craftsman unit in their catalog for $150. Or you can go with the Harbor Freight unit which is often on sale for $69.

One important tip: wear leather gloves when buffing!

If anyone wants to go the extra distance to buy top notch Baldor units, instead of Eastwood go to Enco Tools, they have them for a substantial savings over Eastwood.....Craig
