    C1 Engine Compartment Blackout

Have seen posts on this subject recommending both Krylon 1613 & John Deere Blitz Black. Does anyone have any experience with GM Black Reconditioning Paint (GM#1050104)? Looks similar to Blitz Black to me. Any other recommendations?
    Thanks, Bill

i like SEM Original satin trim paint. not only is it the correct(my thoughts) shade of satin or semigloss black, it doesn't attract and hold lint/dust like others, and god knows there is plenty of dust etc in my shop. mike

      Re: C1 Engine Compartment Blackout

      Bill,
While I have used blitz black on items before, I prefer to use black lacquer flattened to the proper sheen. This is what was used at the factory and in my opinion,is still the best looking, fastest drying paint to use. If you go to your local PPG paint dealer and ask for DDL 9300 flattened to an eggshell gloss, they will make it for you. This is of course, assuming you live in a part of the country where lacquer is still available. A lot depends on what material your car is painted with. If your car is finished with lacquer, you get the added avantage of not having any compatability problwms with the different materials. If you get lacquer top coat on a enamel based blackout paint, it will lift the paint. Once again, just my personal preference, there are many who will swear that Blitz Black is the best thing since sliced bread!

      Regards, John McGraw

SEM satin trim paint; where to purchase

        Mike,

Can you suggest where one can purchase the SEM satin trim paint? I too and tired of the
paints that seems to attract and hold dust and lint. Is SEM available both in spray cans and quarts?

        Gary

You'll find the full line of SEM products....

at most major automotive paint distributors. Don't go looking for it at Wal-Mart/K-Mart. They're know for specialty blends (self etching, Etc.) and you've seen their stuff all the time without really knowing it--the blackout used on today's windshield wiper arms, black vs. chrome bumpers, overhead luggage racks, Etc.

Thanks Mike & John for your suggestions. The car is a '62 and am painting it with PPG lacquer so will check into the DDL 9300. Bill

I know it's not correct but I used a can of gloss black and mixed it with a can of flat black ( 50/50 ) and it seemed about right. Maybe I just got lucky ? I talked to an old parts man and he said he did it that way for years and sold it to resto shops , his customers were very happy with their special paint.
