    C1 Base Coat/Clear Coat possibilities.

I know this flies in the face of the purists but I saw a paint job today where the clear coat had been flattened a bit and it looked a lot like the original laquer with the added durability of bc/cc. I know it would cost points if the car was shown, but, since I drive my little baby every nice day,I kind of like the idea. Any thoughts?

Steve, Don't tell anybody, but if it looks like factory applied lacquer, then IT IS factory applied lacquer. End of conversation. No deduction... Next question...

Steve, If you are going to drive the car there is no comparison in durability between bc/cc and today's lacquer. Flatten teh clear in the door jambs and interior and go with the full gloss outside. The clear can be tinted so that you get some "color" on a buffing rag, but a person familiar with paint will probably still be able to tell the difference. Still, the bc/cc is a far superior system. The lacquer you get today, if you can get it, just isn't the same stuff.

My source is the DuPont tech rep who visits my shop. He was not specific about the chemical formulation, but I suspect it has to do with the deletion of lead form the formula. I have seen this same opinion in print on a number of occassions.

Thanks Ed. The reason I ask is that I too see this opinion shared on line frequently and I have been unable to substantiate the claim through DuPont (corporate) tech support. As for lead - while there has been change to lead content in some components, not all components ever had lead. i.e. while the removal of lead may have an effect on colors like yellow, it would not explain a percieved change to some other colors. ...still trying to figure this one out.

              Best regards,

Here is a technique used by my painter who has been a Corvette specialist since the early 1960's. BC/CC but he sands the CC with 1200-1500 grit and then compounds it. This needs to take place with-in a 24-48 time frame of the application of the CC since the chemical reaction has not progressed to the point of being "hard" or at least as hard as it will get after 72+ hours. This removes the "obvious" clear coat depth factor. I believe he said he applies 4 layers? of CC and sands down 2 layers. I do not know how precise
that activity is but that is the general concept. My quality observation is that the result actually lacks some of the desireable shine I would personally like to see. My $0.02
