    Chrome/Cadmium Plating

Any suggestions on where to send small parts for Chrome/Cadmium plating would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

A number of good service suppliers advertise in NCRS Driveline, but you just might find sources near you.... Chrome plating is done all over the nation and there are ma/pa local shops who can turn out EXCELLENT work, including specialty items like chrome on pot metal, etc. It's a matter of shopping around with your yellow pages.

On cad plating, most think this is a 'dead art' and only a handful of older plating shops who were grandfathered by Federal/State law changes are still in business doing work. This is NOT true....

Cad remains the only surface plating recognized by the FAA for aircraft propeller work. A number of shops coast-to-coast catering to the air industry continue to do cad plating and many are ready to take on classic auto parts work.... Since a number of aircraft props are HUGE, the economics of transporting them to a limited number of 'regional' repair centers doesn't make sense. So, if you 'shop' you plating from the angle of thinking 'airplane' you might be pleasantly surprised to find someone locally doing cad as well as gold irradite/dichromate to boot!

Bob, Jack is right. You must do some looking to find cad platers out there. It is true, though, that a lot of smaller shops dropped it due to EPA regs.

          Jack, what about black phosphate?

          Hi Jack,

I keep getting odd looks at plating shops when I ask if they do black phosphate. I have to tell them I'm not interested in gray phosphate, not black oxide, not black zinc, but black phosphate. I can't find any shop in northern California that does black phosphate. Any suggestions?

          Gary

            Bob,

Where are you located? Chuck Smith from www.chucksmithchevys.com sent me to a place for cad plating. They have done a great job on nuts & bolts and hood latches. As far as chrome I am also looking for a reputable shop.
