what will receive more points toward top flight regarding a restored car, a repo plated ashtray, or an original AAC that was used as an ashtray and it shows by the plating being discolored?

Could be a 'wash' (used original vs. repro) and this is a common dilema.... Depending on how accurately the repro part 'mirrors' the original in terms of Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration and Completeness, you lose originality points but generally get full credit on the part's condition. When it's a real McCoy original that shows signs of use/wear, you can expect full originality points but some loss of condition points.
It's often possible to enter a Catch-22 situation where you're riding a scoring 'teeter totter' with the bottom line score being the same: nice fresh repro part vs. used original. Then, it's a matter of personal choice which way you go that's not always easy to make.
I can tell you that I've seen more than one judge (including myself) develop a 'misty eye' affliction when faced with a correct/original widget that shows VERY modest wear. We get used to seeing so many repro parts that we sometimes 'forget' to deduct condition points (maybe jot a note) when the real thing appears with modest yet discernable wear....- Top
