timing on a 1962 fuel injection

When I checked the timing, I found:

    1. The car would run pretty good when the distributor was loosened and rotated counterclockwise until the mark on the harmonic balancer is off the scale and is now showing up at the very top of the harmonic balancer. If I retard the timing to about 4 degrees advanced, the car dies.
    2. When the mark on the harmonic balancer is at 0 on the scale, the rotor points to the eight o'clock position on the distributor, when referenced from the centerline of the cap. The rotor basically points to the driver.

Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jerry Nutt

Jerry, check my response to your previous post. For one thing, you have probably got the distributer 180* off from where most people set it, but what is important is the RELATIVE position of the rotor button to #1 piston.
Do you have an Assembly Instruction Manual and/or the ST12 factory service manual? Or the Chilton "copy", or anything?

What about pulling the dist. to verify that the drive gear is properly indexed. If it's 180 degrees out, it will cause the same rotor cap misalignment as on a non-FI distributor.

I noticed in your profile that you do all of your work yourself. I'm sure you're quite proud of that; most members feel the same way you do.

Jerry, I'm going to say this as nicely as I can. It sounds to me like you need more tuning help than you are going to be able to get through brief internet chats. I don't know where you are in Florida, but I suggest that you hire a local NCRS member who understands Chevrolet engine spark timing in general and fuel injection distributors in particular. Help is not hard to find.

Do you know how to check the location of TDC on the balancer? Do you have the stock mechanical advance parts working properly in your distributor? And, most importantly, are you running a stock 011 FI distributor without vacuum advance?

We all have to hire help at times. I know I certainly do.
