I need to know what the diameter of the front of the starter motor for a 71, 454,with automatic. I am having trouble with my heat riser counterweight. The starter that I have interfers with the movement of the counterweight. The diameter of the starter which is on the car is approximatly 4 1/4 inches in diameter. It appears that that this can not exceed 4 inches in order for the counterweight to clear. If anyone could be of assistance it would be very helpful to me in slecting the correct starter.Your assistance would be greatly appreciated
If you're looking for one that's 4" in diameter, you'll be looking for quite awhile.
While a few different starter main frame configurations were used over the years, ALL V-8 Corvette starters used from 1955 through 1987 had a rear frame diameter 4-1/4". No exceptions, at all.
Frank The heat risers I have seen are not all the same so the counter weights location may not be the same. Could you have it on the wrong way? I think if it can be installed and working that the direction of the counterweight will not be noticed by many people.
