Mid Year Brake & Clutch Pedal Pads

The '64 through 7 assembly manual lists the brake and clutch pedal pads as part number 6256368.

'65,'67 and '69 parts books list this same part number and also 3790372 for special high performance.

'63 parts numbers are different in the '63 parts book.

A '75 parts book lists 3988198 for '63-7 which is different in appearance form original pads I've usually seen.

What does the special performance pad (3790372) apply to?

Is the 3988198 a service replacement?

I believe that the P&A Catalog may be incorrect on the 3746702 pad. I believe that the GM #3746702 pedal pad is one that is embossed "power brakes". I think that some or all 1963-67 Corvettes with J-50 power brakes and without Powerglide used this pad on the brake pedal. These cars used the GM #6256368 pad on the clutch pedal. Cars with manual brakes and standard transmission used the 6256368 on both brake and clutch pedals. The 3746072 was also used for the brake pedal pad on "special performance" brake systems (J-56), since all J-56 systems were also power brakes. The GM #6256368 will fit on the brake pedal of BOTH manual brake and power brake equipped cars which were also equipped with manual transmissions.

The GM #3988198 is a SERVICE-replacement pad for 63-67 models which came into use in May, 1972 when the GM #6256368 was discontinued.

GM records show that the GM #3746702 was discontinued in May, 1972 and replaced by GM #3881784. I beleive that this is an error in the records. The GM #3881784 was the pedal pad used for 66-67 Corvettes with auto trans and power brakes. I don't think that it will fit a mid year with manual transmission (i.e. with a clutch pedal), but it's possible that it will.

Thanks Joe. The number you quote 3746702 do you mean 3790372?

I have what may be an NOS 3790372 and it is the "POWER BRAKE" embossed pad with the part number cast into the back side.

Yes, this is a case of "haste makes waste" on my part.

Let me try to correct my earlier post as best I can:

GM #3790372 was the power brake pedal pad for manual transmission cars. This is the pad that may have been used on some or all 1963-67 Corvettes with J-50 power brakes and manual transmissions. It was used on all 63-67 Corvettes with J-56 power brakes. It was discontinued in October, 1971 and replaced by the GM #3988198, which is the SERVICE-only pad which can be used for either clutch or brake pedals. The 3988198 also replaced the 6256368 in May, 1972 as I stated.

The GM #3746702 was the pedal pad for J-50 power brakes with Powerglide. It was used in PRODUCTION for 63-67 Corvettes. It was discontinued in May, 1972 and replaced by GM #3881784. The latter part was a pre-existing part that was used in PRODUCTION for 1966-70 passenger cars with auto trans and without P/B. It is the "wide" pad, like the 3746702, but with no "power brake" embossing. So, the GM P&A Catalog was NOT incorrect regarding the supercession for the 3746702. I had the 3746702 and the 3790372 part numbers "mixed up".
