    C3 Stingray Fender Emblems

There were two different emblems used: 1968-1973 and 1974-1976. Was the break really that clear cut at the end of the model year or did some early 1974 use the earlier 1968-1973 style emblem?

      Geoffrey----

The 1968 side emblems were actually there, but they were designed to be invisible. It was the first application of "stealth" technology on a Corvette.

After 37-1/2 years of straight, uninterrupted employment, being "free again" is such a great feeling that I'm having to learn how to handle it.

The "ZL-1" is languishing. When I get myself motivated, I'll have the engine done in 2 days. Maybe less. It's all ready for assembly.

                Geezer-----

I won't be at Bloomington this year since I'm going to Nashville/Bowling Green for the 50th Celebration. In fact, I'll be flying to the mid west a week from today. After that event I'll be flying to the Boston area for a week. So, I'll be "off-board" from 6/21 through 7/8.

One more thing (and getting this subject back to a more technical nature):

although the "Stingray" side emblem changed configuration over the 69-76 (actually, into very early 77, too) period, the part number never changed. It was GM #3956216 from 1969 right up to the present time.

I believe that the "first design" of this emblem was manufactured by a different source than the "second design" and that accounts for the difference in configuration. In fact, I think that the "first design" may have been manufactured in-house by GM (most likely by Inland-Fisher-Guide). This would have been rare for a low-production piece like this Corvette-only emblem, but I think that's how it was.

I think that the "second design" was transferred to an outside (or, at least, another) vendor. For whatever reason, the design of the piece changed slightly. If I'm correct about all this, that would strongly indicate that the changeover did not occur exactly coincident with a year model changeover.

                    Joe,

I hope you bring the sun and warm weather to Boston. It has been a bad spring preceeded by a worse winter. In any event it is a great city to visit. Enjoy.

                          Re: C3 Stingray Fender Emblems

Just curious, how did it differ? I have my originals from my Oct 24 1973 built 74 L82 (1Z37T4S406823) and two I bought over the counter about 15 years ago and didn't notice any difference, but maybe I wasn't looking close enough. One other observation, my 74 has the pot metal side market lights like ther earlier cars, not the plastic units listed for 74 up. I found this out by ordering what I thoought was the right parts, and finding the plastic vs metal. At the time, they parts system still had the metal units, so I ordered more from the pre 74 era to match my originals........Craig

                            Craig-----

The "1st design" emblems differed with respect to the configuration of the dot over the "i" and a few other minor details. The dot on "1st design" emblems is completely seperated from the bottom part of the "i". "2nd design" emblems have just a "groove" between the dot and the bottom portion of the "i".

By 1974, I think that the "2nd design" emblems were already being used in PRODUCTION.
