    C1 Powerglide

I have a 1956 with 265/225 dual quad and the original Powerglide tranny. After sitting for a couple of weeks, upon starting the car the PG has a case of projectile vomiting up and through the PG dipstick well. What would cause this to puke up sometimes as much as a half a pint of tranny fluid? I have been very careful upon refill to not overfill. Any ideas? Thanks.

our 54 vet, restored in early 80's and with over 35k miles since then has done the same punk senerio since the powerglide was rebuilt by prof. tranny shop in early 80's. took it back to the tranny shop(owner old as dirt and cut his incisors on powerglides, dynaflows and hydros). he tried to correct the puking seversal times and gave up. the pg never pukes if its driven daily(has road toured to most national conventions since '86) . if it sits for more than 2 or 3 days, it burps up 2 to 4 oz of ATF. I've learned to live with it buy giving the old 54 to my eldest daughter. mike

My Harley does the same thing if it sits too long, only in this case, it is engine oil. However, I don't plan to solve the problem by giving it to my only daughter...

Garry It's most likely a damaged suction pipe seal or the ears on the suction pipe retainer are bent. It's the trans filter inside on the right side ,it's held in by two srews . Your trans is sucking AIR like when you first drink a coke it has a lot of AIR bubbles in it, then you burrpp it out.If your sure the seal is tight and the retainer is not bent and this has always happened over the years then the trans may have a SAND HOLE near the filter pick up . this you will never find and to correct it you will need to replace the trans front housing. PS it's easy to remove the filler side cover and check it out , then use gasket sealer on the old gasket again.

          Garry,
I had the same problem on my '56. Turned out to be the seal on the input shaft leaking and allowing the ATF to leak back from the torque converter to the transmiaaion sump.

Pierre sent a great link on Chevy ,but if the Torque Convertor input shaft seal is lecking IT will fill up the sump housing area causing the trans to over fill and you have trans oil on the garage floor. But not causing a burp out the filler tube. Your trans is sucking AIR some how as I stated.

              Sounds like mine...

Over a period of days the fluid rises up to nearly the top of the filler tube, then burps out when the engine is started. It also drops a bit while stored, probably a separate problem.

I had the same problem on my powerglide. My cure was to replace it with a 5 speed manual but this obviously wont work for everyone. I was told by a few older workers in the tranny shops that the cause is the torque converter leaking its fluid back into the trans case. The result is either 1) fluid on the floor if your seals are bad or 2) the big burp. When the engine is fired you get a big rush of fluid and this is too much for the trans to handle. They told me some fixes but unfortunately I cant remember.
