The steering wheel on our '54 rocks around on the column as if the nut is loose. I need to know how to remove the horn button/ring without damaging anything. We're headed out on a road trip to Bowling Green Saturday, so I need some info quick!

horn button prys out with a pen knife. doubt you'll find the steering wheel loose on the steering col. shaft. problem most likely lies in the worm and sector gears in the steerinmg box. you might try adjusting it. instructions in the C-1 shop manual( 54 steering box adjusts just like the manual describes for a 62). if you can't adjust out the loosness, check tie rod ends, 3 rd arm, drag link etc for loosness. good luck, mike -

If it rocks "around" vs back and forth, you probably have a badly worn upper bearing. This bearing also serves as the horn contact. They are readily available and fairly easy to change. Directions are in the ST12.Comment

Well, the steering wheel is moving but the steering column is not. So I'll be mystified if it isn't the nut that holds on the wheel.
I'll just pry the button off and see what I find. Thanks.Comment

On mine, the spring above the bearing was missing. New spring, no more movement of the steering wheel.Comment

In addition to the spring, there is a tapered washer that the spring presses on. This tapered washer centers the shaft in the bearing. Both are essential to proper wheel support.Comment
