    57' Harmonic Balancer/Seal Dia.

The seal diamerter (1.765 dia.) on the Harmonic Balancer Hub is slightly worn (small groove) from the seal in the timing chain cover. I would like to grind this diameter down enough to clean up, possibly .015. If this wouldn't be acceptable I could "spray weld" the worn area and then grind down to approx. 1.765. How critical is this area concerning oil leaks? Any suggestions or specifications?

As Always, Thanks for the HELP!

    Bob-----

This area is VERY critical regarding oil leaks. However, you don't need to go through all of the trouble that you described to repair it. Repair sleeves for this problem are readily obtainable in the aftermarket for a nominal cost. Press the sleeve on and your done. The slight increase in diameter due to the sleeve is well within the sealing range of the front seal.

Use Locktite on the worn surface before pressing the sleeve on.

agree with joe. Felpro makes the sleeve and it comes with a small tube of loctite. most auto mach. shops can provide it. set the balancer up in a press and use a 3 x 3 inch piece if 1/4 inch plate to press sleeve on balancver. need to make sure the sleeve is being pressed in such a way that the 1/4 plate is perfectly perpedicular to the bed of the press, otherwise you'll split the sleeve. good luck, mike

        Bob,
CARQUEST #65022 seal, $9.00, moves the sealing point approx. 1/4" forward on the hub. Intended for hub applications such as yours. Regards,

Any NAPA store has the "repair sleeve" - you can install it in five minutes using your bench vise.
