Even employing 'elfs from der forrest' it would be pretty expensive to apply those hose stripes using colored strips of tape. After awhile, the elfs would probably go batty trying to do this. After judging so many wrong configured vacuum hoses with sripes way to wide and wrong valued colors, they might as well be tape stripes. In fact there are so many Corvettes out there with these repro hooses that most judges have a special name for them.- Top

Hello friends, writing from the far south. I have a copy of the book which I bought before joining NCRS some years ago. In those pre-Internet days the only available information on vettes, in Argentina, were a couple of magazines and the books advertized in them. Newton's book has ups and downs, some chapters are interesting and other are not, perhaps more oriented to Corvette modifiers than restorers. I don't know the backstage about the book, but it was clear for me in those times that an engine rebuilder was probably part of the business, as is mentioned quite often in the engine rebuild chapter. No resto details, no useful information in that topic for factory configuration resto.
Some advices are useful and other are not, Newton's idea was to build a car which pleased him, with some deviations from what we like in this board... Well, to be honest he is saying 'restore and modify' so any person could like or dislike it. You know the phrase, something like 'the beauty is in the eye of the beholder'

The Starkweather is very nice! As far as the hoses go, you can look at Bowtie cars just like me....You can see the width of the stripes and the tread pattern. Generally the stripes are to wide and the colors are "tints", which means there is white mixed in with the red, yellow, etc. I wouldn't know the first thing about how the originals were made and painted, but I'm sure you know how to get a pretty good reproduction made!- Top

Dr., I saw your article about hoses, refering to John Woods Restorer articles about hoses. I'm sure he was refering to your FAT striped hoses. John made a hobby of his reaserch into various repro and original parts, especially vacuum hoses (not spelling!)John didn't respond to your E-mails because he was undergoing cancer therapy. If you read your Restorer you would know that John died. He will recieve the NCRS "Member of the Year Award" this year at the Nationals. His wife, Donna will be there to accept for him.- Top

In a 1992-2003 database I have several customers with the same last name, with and without an S on the end. Two of them are John and neither purchased any vacuum hose kit, and neither has a C3. Also checked all females, only one Lourinda, and no C3. Do you know how this sale was made?
