Does anyone have a recommendation or source for engine enamel that would be appropriate for a 1956 265 currently under construction? I have a water pump with some of the original paint intact and it appears to be a darker red with an orange hue; kind of a darker version of Venetian Red.

Re: 265 engine paint
Bernard-----
1956 Corvette engines were a completely different color than 57+. The color was as you describe-----mostly red with just a hint of orange. There is a company that usually advertises in Hemmings that carries a good reproduction of this color in a very high quality paint. I think it's Bill Hirsch and they're located in New Jersey. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks for your response. I'll look in my issue of Hemmings. About all I've found locally is a Ford color and a generic red engine paint, both of which are too bright.- Top

Re: 265 engine paint
Yes Steve, I've seen your engine... And you've seen the one I'm going to paint! I found Hirsch's web site via Google and see I can order it online. I'm also going to check out Steve Westphal's suggestion, since I'll be driving by their place within the next couple weeks. Thanks for everyone's feedback. Bernie- Top

Re: 265 engine paint
Steve, I just looked at the CC catalog. Along with their description, they have a photo with the spray cans depicted. I could make out "HI-TECH" on the can of red so I did a Google search and found Seymour Paints, Sycamore, IL is the manufacturer. I looked up the item on their web site (see link below). Pictures of their products on their web site match those in the CC catalog. They also have a little video presentation. They have two reds. One is described as a "Ford/Chrysler Red" p/n EN-44, the other as "GM Red", p/n EN-59, which I assume is what CC would send. Now I'm trying to find a local distributor for their product so I can look at it before I buy; it's $20/16 oz. can from CC. Bernie Myers

Re: 265 engine paint
Bernard, I had my engine rebuilt last winter and used the Hirsch V8 Red and not only is it the correct color but the coverage was fantastic. My engine guy even asked me what we were using (I helped at this stage) because he had never used such a high quality paint from a spray bomb. I would highly recommend you consider not only the correct color but, the coverage differences that you may get between the two. Maybe Steve can comment on this subject.

Re: 265 engine paint
Garry/Bernie,
I had the same quality experience with the Hirsch paint - however, I did have a fish eye or two on the oil pan. I found that if I did a good wipe down with acetone befor I painted, I ensured that all remnants of oil or grease from assembly of the short block were gone. I think the color is good - but I really don't have a good frame of reference for the original color. Steve- Top

Re: 265 engine paint
Bernie - they make an awesome stainless steel paint too, Steve Hack turned me on to it for restoration of midyear headlight motor field cases. I couldn't find the Seymour paint easily in Tucson, but found this farm-hardware website in CA that sells it for a great price. You might want to give them a try...Craig

Re: 265 engine paint
Craig, I didn't find the "GM Red" listed on their web site. Maybe the I.H.C. Red would work? I think I'll try to find some of each and see what comes closest to the original paint still clinging to my spare water pump.- Top
