    Carb Cleaning

My 66 big block carb was restored about 5 years ago, I'm in the process now of a full off-body restoration of the car, since the carb restoration, the car has less than 1000 miles on it. Should I restore the carb again or just clean it up. If I should clean it up, what is the best cleaner to use.

todays gasolines tend to varnish the inards of carbs if unused for about 6 months. Ifyours neds cleaned, suggest lacquer thinner and blow gun and new gasket kit. mike

Mike, what all should be cleaned? Do I need to disassemble it?

disassemble it then i soak all parts in a gallon tin can full of lacquer thinner(put lid on can). soak for 24-48 hours, then remove parts induvidually and blow out all passages with air(l25 psi or thereabouts at blow gun). cleanliness imperative. good luck, mike

          Re: Carb Cleaning

I use the large gallon bucket of B-12 carb cleaner available at many auto partws stores. Works like a charm, and I don't get high. I leave that to doctors older than myself.

The B-12 just smells like formaldehyde. Brings back visions of gross anatomy days...

Mike, since this is the first time doing this, can you give me more specifics about what actually comes off the carb, sorry about this, but I don't want to screw anything up. Thanks.

              Jim:

I agree with Mike that there is no better solvent than lacquer thinner, except maybe acetone. That is, if you don't mind donating some brain cells in the process (ignorance is indeed bliss). You must not let the solvent come into contact with the fast idle cam, or the secondary deployment diaphragm (this is not usually included in any rebuild kit, but can be purchased separately from Holley). The accel pump diaphragm, float needles, and power enrichment valve will be replaced, so not to worry. A good source of Holley parts is Chicago Corvette. Their catalog has some great exploded views which may be of some help.

                    Mike,

                    What are friends for?

My wife can't stand it when I have to clean a carb. She's a former biology teacher.

Our wives must be from the same batch. My wife can't stand it when I forget to unzip my fly.
