    Side Exhaust Restoration

Can mid-year side exhaust covers be restored? If so, can I do it myself or is it best to send them out. Also, what is the cost of someone else restoring them vs myself?

Don't know of any such services because, until recently, these were available off-the-shelf from GM/Chevy and the typical 'damage' that results to originals is major stone dings in cosmetic metal surfaces (especially forward behind front wheels) as well as paint wear/chip to the silver colored accent paint that runs between ribs. Labor costs to attempt 'restoration' of well worn covers basically rendered the consideration uneconomic....

      Jim:

I restored mine, myself, about 3 years ago, before the covers again became available in reproduction. Although they are perfect in every way, I would not repeat the process. You are better off buying new ones.
If you have a lot of time on your hands, then the trick involved, is that you must have the remnants of the clear anodizing stripped off before you can attempt to refinish them.

Jim, there are places. I had mine done three years ago. They looked great! Because I'm an idiot, I didn't put the plastic protector on until this spring. I will probably have them redone this winter.

Do you remember where you got your done? What exactly has to be done to them?
