    Belt configuration

I have a 1970 454 that Ieplaced the water pump in and I didn't note the belt configuration before I took it all apart. It has a power steering pump below the alternator that was put on by a GM dealer and the alternator and that is it. It looks like the alternator is the only tension adjustment available. It appears that one belt went from the crank to the water pump without any adjuster and one from the power steering to the alternator and one belt from the crank to the water pump and the power steering pump. This looks weird to me as there is no adjuster visible to tension the steering pump 3 pulley belt. The alternator has 2 grooves as does the steering pump. I couldn't find any diagrams in any of the resto manuals as to the configuration. Help!
    Thanks, Daniel

    Re: Belt configuration

Dan The belts you have are the same setup as my 454. The P/S pump has an adjustment on it . I do it from below on a lift with a flex socket and a long extension you can loosen the adjustment. To tighten the belt I use a tool that pushes between the pulleys and then tighten the adjuster and remove the tool, all done from below. With this setup the tension on the P/S pump belt must also drive the alternator and needs to be correct. You are correct their is no adjustment on the water pump to crank belt. Lyle
