I have been noticing some fading in the brakes and increased travel of the brake pedal. I do not see any leaking at the wheels or the master cylinder. I have set up an appointment with a mechanic. From my description he thought that either the brakes needed to be adjusted or the master cylinder would need replacing. I am attempting to keep the car original. If the master cylinder needs to be replaced what would your recommedation be? Have the present one rebuilt, try to find one somewhere or buy new (if possible)? Thanks for your help.

Re: C1 - 1960 Brake Problem
Assuming you have the correct M/C (5454480-320-G), I would have it rebuilt and sleeved. There are numerous companies that do this and it usually only takes
about 1 week turnaround. If you wantyo buy an original most major venders have them for
about $300 rebuilt, sleeved and ready to install. Non original replacements are about $80.- Top

Re: C1 - 1960 Brake Problem
C1 drum brakes are not self-adjusting like '63-'64, and require occasional adjustment as the linings wear; before putting money into the master cylinder, adjust the brakes (procedure is in the ST-12) and you'll probably be in good shape. My '57 only needed one adjustment in 5,000 miles after I restored it.- Top
