    '60 Engine paint turning black

The paint on the intake manifold (Chevrolet Orange #200 by plasti-cote) is turning black under the Carburetor. (Heat riser passageway?) Is this normal? Is this what I get for using cheap paint? This stuff is supposed to 'resist" heat up to 500 degrees. Will the judges ding me for this?

orange to black is normal but you could have delayed the process if you had used the plates included in most intake gaskets(blocks hot gases from pre-heating the carb). judges will ding but 1 out of 4500 the norm. mike

I used the plates on my Dad's 72, and it burned off faster than it did on my 71 when I didn't use the plates. These were the plates with the small hole, not the ones that totally block it off. I still wanted the choke to work.

      Many judges don't deduct.

Just wait until it soon starts flaking off, and the cast iron underneath starts rusting. Oh joy.

It won't keep the paint from eventually burning, but be sure the heat riser is opening.

Most engine paint I see is rated for 1200*. The exhaust manifolds reach about 7-800* on my car according to my IR thermometer.

Flint Engine used the cheapest enamel paint they could buy in bulk each month, and it certainly wasn't "heat-resistant" by any wild stretch of the imagination; taking a deduction for burned paint on the intake at the crossover passage is unreasonable; the engine WAS started between the time it was installed and when it was delivered to the purchaser. This is the kind of ultra-anal stuff that makes people scratch their heads

Also, as I'm sure you recall, the engines were run on propane at Flint prior to their shipment to the assembly plants. Then, as you pointed out, they were run after they were installed in the cars and prior to delivery to the dealers. I think that the engine paint at the crossover passage would have suffered, to some degree, almost immediate blackening when the engines were fired at Flint.

Quite correct, Joe, and NCRS encourages "driving our cars" by having the "miles driven" points in the formula; I don't think the spirit of that philosophy includes having to re-paint your intake manifold after you drive to the meet and park your car on the judging field. As judges, we're supposed to help owners achieve an award for their efforts, not nit-pick them with stupid crap like burned paint on the crossover passage that makes them wonder why they showed up in the first place.

If the judge thinks the degree of burnt paint is as delivered he should take no deduction. The point where it is too much is up to the two black hats to make their judgement call. Good Luck

If the standard is "as delivered." There should be a deduction for NOT having burnt paint.
