I just installed new seals in a 1111022 distributor and now it is hard to turn the main shaft. Before it spun easily, now it is like winding a grandfather clock. Did I screw up big time, or is it just the new seals? Thanks.

Rebuilt Distributor
I did not check the endplay with a dial indicator, but visually, it is pretty tight. I did loosen the three screws that hold the cross shaft end piece in place and pushed the gears apart as I retightened the screws. This helped a lot. I will check the end play next. Thanks- Top

Re: Rebuilt Distributor
Bob-
I would not think the main shaft bushings (I assume this is what you replaced)would do this unless you somehow rolled them over when driving them into place. The only other seals are the felt and plastic top cover -- neither should bind the shaft in any way.
Check the tach cross gear -- remove it and see if the main shaft now turns smoothly. I recently replaced a cross gear and mainshaft in my '71 and the new gear refused to mesh correctly and it was tough to turn -- similar to yours. I had another spare, used it and it turned nice and smooth. You should have around .010 of mainshaft endplay according to an article I read. I just finished mine last weekend (complete rebuild) and it works great!
Hope this helps -
