    C2 fuelie heads

Can anyone tell me what size valves were originally in the 63, 64 and 65 fuel car cylinder heads. I believe they were different maybe in 65 to get more horsepower? Did they change from 1.94 to 2.02 on the intake? Please help I am rebuilding. Thanks

The "461X" heads used on '62 and '63 SHP/FI engines were machined for 1.94"/1.50" valves. Beginning in '64 the valve sizes were increased to 2.02"/1.60" on 461X castings used on SHP/FI engines and the later 462 castings used on SHP small blocks.

      Jim,

just a caution. Do NOT try to install hardened seats in the 64 or 65 heads as there is not enough material and you risk hitting the water jacket. I have a nice door stop in the basement as a result of having this attempted.

also do not install the 2.02 valve without relieving the chamber wall for air flow or the air flow will be less than with the smaller valve because of the turbulance.

I am rebuilding a 63 fuelie motor and heads, also. My 63, oct 62 cast) heads are rebuild, but do not have hardened seats. My engine builder recomends to put harded seats in. George, you stated, that 64 and 65 heads have a problem running into the water passage, when machineing for valve seats. Does this apply to early 63 heads also ? Or should I stay with ground, as cast valve seats ?

Frankly, I wouldn't sweat the valve size issue at all. I had a very succesful bracket racer tell me there isn't enough variation in the performance curve between these heads to notice on the street.

The Judges (if you are so inclined) will never know. And most likely, you won't drive you car hard enough to know the difference either.

Try to find casting dates to match your car and spend your money on something else.

unless your engine will see a lot of full throttle operation like racing or pulling a trailer forget the hardened inserts. remember lead free amoco white gas was around for years before the hardened inserts

                Rainer,

I don't have experience with the '63 heads. Obviously they have more material to start with, but I would not chance it. After breaking through, the shop sent my head to an aircraft mechanic supposedly very skilled at welding and he still could not fix it. I would bow to Clem's experience on this.
