    passenger side mirror position

    Gentlefolk -

I purchased a passenger side side-view mirror for my 1970 'vette coupe. A template came with the mirror which shows where the mounting holes should be drilled in the right hand door. If I follow the template, the right-side mirror will be about 1-inch further back on the door than the driver's side mirror is. Probably nobody would ever notice, but the difference bugs me. Is it correct that the right side mirror be in a different relative position as the driver's side mirror, i.e., 1-inch further back?

    TIA.

It is correct that the mirror not be there at all, however if you insist on installing one, put it where you can see out of it best.

      Re: passenger side mirror position

      Hi George -

I realize that the right-side mirror was not offered as a factory option, but my local Chevy dealer told me that it was a dealer-installed option. According to him, he even had a brand new "stock" right-hand mirror in his parts book. However, I did not buy it from him b/c he wanted far more than another vendor. My question is: are dealer-installed options considered "incorrect"?

If it would be incorrect, I would be torn on what to do. But, when I ordered the mirror, I thought it was correct.

      Thanks.

        George,
We have had the "early C3 right hand mirror correct or incorrect" discussion here before. I maintain that the right hand mirror, shaped like the driver's side, was not available at all until model year 1973 based on my recollection of when I purchased the one on my car. Others maintain it was available for dealer installation earlier.
I can tell you for sure that there is no right hand mirror shown in the 1970 dealer accessories booklet.
All that said, it is your car and you can do what you want to it. If you, or a subsequent owner, choose to have it judged at an NCRS event it will likely receive a minor deduction for a right hand mirror.

Paul The same mirror was used in 73 and both sides and are 7 1/2 inches back from the top edge of the door to the first hole on both sides on my cars.A small deduction will be made but the safety of having it may be worth it as we are all in the habit of having two mirrors. Lyle

Would the same be true in regard to a luggage rack?

No George. A luggage rack is one of the dealer installed options listed in the 1970 Accessory book. I believe there was a luggage rack listed in every year Dealer Accessory book from 1968 to 1972, and beyond at least until the hatchback window came into being.

But yes, from personal experience, the luggage rack does receive a deduction (5 points).

It makes it a PITA to wash or wax the rear deck, too.

On my 1970, passenger side mirror installed 30 years ago, both mirrors are the same distance from the front edge of the door. At the time I used the templet that was supplied with the passenger side mirror to install it.

                    Gentlemen -

Thank you for the information on the correctness (or not) of the passenger mirror and the luggage rack. I'll take the points deduction for the advantages of safety and storage.
