The corresponding Echlin can is #VC-1810, stamped "B28" on the bracket; $10 at NAPA. You don't need a dial-back light - measure the circumference of the balancer, divide by 10, and put a piece of masking tape that length on the clockwise side of the index mark on the balancer. The end of the piece of tape will be 36 degrees when it's lined up with "0" on the timing tab, and you can further subdivide it for lesser readings.

      Thanks John,
I'll look for the numbers on the vac can, I'll replace it if it's not correct. I like the masking tape trick!

        John:

        Yep, that's how I do it also. 360*/10=36* 12*init+24*cent=36*total
This works for me, but I think Mr.Dillon went out and bought degree tape for his 8" balancer.

BTW: Bill Dillon needed that NAPA/Eichin part number.

I've done most of what everyone has suggested except verify the number on the vac advance can. The engine is running much better off the bottom, but now I'm getting a part throttle surge around 3000 rpm. Could this be the result of too much advance? (I set the timing at 12 deg @ 550 rpm). Could it be a blown power valve? I backfired the carb a few times.
          Thanks,
          William

How do you know how much "advance" you have unless you determine the specs and performance of the installed vacuum can? At any given engine speed and load, the total advance is determined by a combination of initial, centrigufal, and vacuum advance. Post the numbers on the mounting bracket on the backside of the diaphram. You should be able to read them without removing the dist. cap. If it is the original or vintage Delco replacment can it will read 236 16.

Unfortunately, one back-fire usually does it for a Holley.

                William:

If the power valve were ruptured, the engine would run too rich. Surge at speed is an indication of a lean condition.

Let's go back to the beginning. Do you live at high altitude? If not, then your carburetor does not need any mods to run the engine properly. WHO REBUILT YOUR CARBURETOR???? WHAT COLOR ARE YOUR PLUGS???? ONCE AGAIN, here is what I would do:

                1. Replace the vac advance can with the proper 236 or cheaper NAPA/Eichin unit.
                2. Remove all the plugs and read them.
                3. Verify that you have the proper "65" power valve installed. "65" indicates that it begins to open @ 6.5 in-hg.
                4. Verify that you have the proper "65" primary mainjets installed.
                5. Verify that you have the proper "73" secondary mainjets installed.
                6. Check the operation of your heat riser.

I am fairly certain of the Holley numbers. To double check, go to www.holley.com, and look for the specs for model 2818 carb.
