    C2 starter problem Starter numbers?

Today after a local show I went to start my 66 and the starter made an awful chattering sound and the motor turned over very slowly. After a few tries the motor caught and I was able to drive home. I tried the starter again at home and the chatter was the same with the same slow turn over of the motor. I checked all the electrical conections and they were fine. The battery is new and I don't believe it is discharged. The amp meter registered as usual when driving home. I removed the starter for the first time since owning the car and checked the numbers. The numbers on the case read 1109062 9521 4. I checked in my NCRS specifications guide and I believe the correct numbers should be 1107320. The starter looks too new to be correct to the car.( probably an off the shelf rebuilt one ) It had a paper sticker on it that read.. 12404044 323-236 A96. Can anyone identify what starter I have and maybe give me some advice as to what is wrong with the starter I have. Can you tell if it is the solinoid or the starter itself. can i get one at the local parts store as a temp replacement? Where should I look for the correct one for my car? I will be attending Carlisle this year. Thank you for any and all information.

    Bruce
P.S. The motor is a 327 300 hp Correct block.

    Bruce:

First, the solenoid is ok because it engages the starter, albeit weakly. If the starter is a service replacement, that is fine, as long as it works with your car (Joe L. will be more help here, as far as part numbers).
It sounds like the symptoms of a weak battery. Make sure your battery posts are clean. Check the connections to the starter. If these are all OK, look for a weak battery.

Were both bolts "gootentight" when you removed the starter? If one or both bolts were loose, the starter could have shifted. This would explain the "awful chattering sound" as the teeth on the starter were misaligned with the flywheel.

The weak battery theory also sounds reasonable. Low voltage may not thrust the starter gear far enough to fully engage the flywheel.

There is a really good article in the August 2003 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. It describes everything you need to know about GM Starters, i.e. shimming, noise, things to look for in used/rebuilt starters.

Thank you all for your responses. I tested the starter motor out of the car and it works just fine. I then tested the starter thru the solenoid and the chatter was very evident. I took the solenoid apart and found it was burned and corroded badly. I cleaned it up and tested it again. The unit worked much better but not perfect. Since the starter turned out to be the wrong one for my car. I will buy a cheap temp. replacement and look for the correct one at Carlisle this year. Thanks again for the words of wisdom.
