    Steering Box Rebuild for C1

The steering in my '61 goes clunk and has for several years. Years ago I remember seeing ads in Driveline for a company in Arkansas that was rebuilding the boxes. Now I notice suppliers like Corvette Central offer the parts and or rebuild svc. Does anyone have any experience purchasing the parts and doing the work themselves? Are the parts all made by the same individual or company? Are there reliability concerns with any of the kits? Many years ago, there was a Restorer article about welding the worm gear and machining it down. Durability was a concern since the original gears were hardened and had a hardness that was difficult to replicate. While I'm at it, are the Drag-link kits worth it? Or are there any pitfalls in some of them? One good thing that I have noticed about my procrastination of a restoration over the past 15 years is that there are more services being offered now. Thank, Doug

Hi Doug- There is a steering box rebuilder in Anderson, SC that I have visited with at Cypress Gardens and such places. He has not done my box, but was very helpful in giving me hints and he has a good supply of seals, etc. Certainly can't hurt to talk to him and get his flyer. His '97 flyer says $395 to rebuild a steering box. Call Tom Reina, (864) 287-9990. He also showed a web site: ww-interlink.net/~corvette. (I've not seen such a strange web address, so you need to call first) Good luck!

I've done several drag links - a couple just needed disassembly, thorough cleaning and proper lube as they had little actual wear, and a couple of others had apparently never been lubed, showed major wear, and had to be rebuilt. Only thing to watch out for in drag link kits is to make sure the ball-seat inserts have holes through them for grease to travel through from the grease fitting; without the holes (and I've seen kits without them), the only lubricant the ball seats will ever see is whatever you use when you reassemble them.
