C2: Maximum size spare tire

Whereas the 205-70-15s look great on the car, that size won't fit into the spare tire carrier. Diameter is right, but the tire is too wide to close the hatch.

Any suggestions for optimum size are greatly appreciated.

To a certain extent, it will depend on your rim - if you are using the steel rims or K/Os. On my '64, I have Coker repro red lines on K/O wheels. The tires are close to the original bias ply. I cannot fit this tire in the tub with a K/O rim. The bias ply on a K/O just fits. I figure it will do for the short distance I might have to drive in the unlikely event that I do get a flat. It would have to be a nasty flat too as I keep a can of Fix a Flat in the car.

Mark,

You may want to consider purchasing a longer bolt kit offered by many suppliers.
I have a 67 with the longest bolt kit available and I have a 215/65-15 Goodyear for a spare.

My problem wasn't just the width of the tire, which the longer bolts will help but also the diameter. I may have been able to squeeze the radial in there but I was afraid I would not be able to get it out - at least not easily. I also did not want to risk damage to the tub. Even the bias ply just fits.
