    63 Emergency Brake Handle Spirng

I have noticed my emergency brake handle does not engage, it slides back into the housing. It appears that the spring in the housing has come disconected from the pawls. Hoe do the pawls go into the housing? How do you reconect the sping? Do you need to take the handle housing out? Are ther any picture on this procedure?

thyuink it would be way easier to remove the e-brake handle assembly and correct the spring problem. don't know of any illustrations to help you. it'll be trial and error. have done it before and it wasn't all that difficult. good luck, mike

      George,

With the problem that you described, you will probably need to purchase a rebuilt kit. The kit comes with a diagram of the installation.

I did this a few months ago and it is a straightforward operation. The only 'trick' was that after you installed the springs and pawls, you then had to position the pawls up and forward then slide the e-brake handle into the housing.

After you purchase the kit and if the diagram isn't clear, let me know, maybe I can send to you some pictures.

      Good luck,

      Gary

I just had my 63 emergency brake handle apart last weekend to repair the spring. In my opinion you have to remove the assembly from the dash to correct the problem. This means disconnecting the oil pressure line. The entire job took me about 2 hours. When you have the handle removed from the dash you will see that the prawls can slide out of the assembly. The spring fits on the ends of the 2 prawls as you slide the prawls back into position. Install the handle into the assembly prior to installation in the car. By doing this you can easily align the prawls so they rachet properly. I don't have photos but would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
