I recently purchased a second Vette. this one is air cond and auto. I am considering converting the a/cond to the R134A system from the original R12. Can anyone comment on the issues that may arise or things to watch out for by doing this. The last thing I want to do is destroy the originality of the car(still has original 1967 components throughout). Thank you in advance for your comments ,they are truely appreciated.

R12 is not readily available in Canada(home). Rather than try and find the holy grail, I thought the next step(R134)might as well happen sooner than later. The car has a low system right now and I have to deal with it. I would much prefer to leave it as it is, but if I have to change...what are the possible repercussions?- Top

A few years ago, after all the conversion BS died away I converted my 69 427-400 to 134 changing only the O rings.
The system was evaced for sometime in an effort to ensure as much of the residual oils were removed, (at least as much as possible).
I filled the system with R12/R134 compatible synthetic oil and charged.
There has been much said about this refrigerants ability to "bleed through" R12 designed hoses; in my situation I don't feel this was a factor.
I do believe it is not capable of cooling as efficiently or as rapid a cool down.
However, when I sold it to the "Good Doctor" three years later it was still functioning well in my opinion and I live in Florida.
The fabrication of an adapter was necessary and its legality is in question but the charging valves remained completely stock.

I had 134 in my 65 for a year and it worked. When I went back to r-12 and put new cross flow condensor in I gained 6-8 degrees. As stated I used adaptors to retain all stock appearing valves. Don H.- Top
