    Newbie looking for help?

Hey all - I'm looking for some info. This will be my first classic car. I am most interested in an all original. I want to be able to drive it but I also want it as an investment. I found a 69 Convertible with correct very well rebuilt 350/350 but not NOM. Everything else about the car is correct and in excellent shape including the 4 spd. What is it worth? I may not get to monitor this board that often so get back with me at jfeatherston@wrea.com with any input - thanks in advance.

Wow - I opened myself up a real can of worms here. Allot of work has been done on the car and allot of new parts have gone into making it extremely nice and certainly more reliable. I don't have the patience or the wallet for a top flight vehicle but I do want one that is as close to original specifications as possible (I know that differs from original period). I was just concerned the NOM (the size CU/HP is correct - just not the original block) may detract too much from the overall value. Thanks to Jack for his in-depth replys - I received a solid education in just one email.

Jim, if the original configuration engine is in place, with the correct, but not necessarily original accessories, it isn't too big a deal to make the car a "matching numbers" car. There are several businesses that can supply a correctly dated and stamped short block for around $2K. That may be one of the least expensive and troublesome deficiencies to correct on a vintage Vette.
If you are not interested in flight judging and the engine compartment appears "period correct" a NOM should not greatly affect the value of the car. Perhaps a $2-3K deduct, if that.

I would be much more concerned about the car's body, FRAME, and interior. Many folks spend upwards ot $10K just on a paint job. A complete interior restore will set you back at least as much as an engine rebuild, and a rotten frame can sour the entire vehicle. On a C2 or C3, rust in the windshield frame work would make the NOM look like a spark plug change.

            Jim,

You might want to look into your local NCRS chapter (see elsewhere on this website) and ask if there is a well-experienced judge to have a look at the car with you. As you can certainly imagine, there are any number of less-than-scrupulous sellers out there looking for a pigeon. Don't give 'em the satisfaction!
Pay a good experienced NCRS judge to look at the car and assemble a list of "infractions". There are a lot of subtleties to these cars and knowing them can mean the difference between finding a gem and getting reamed. As with women, what looks nice ain't always the case.

Just my two cents, but I bet some people here agree with me.
