I have original plates for my '62 & '66. Both Calif. plates, both in need of restoring. Anyone have good recommendations?

Re: License Plate Restore
Do you plan to use these plates on you vehicles?? California DMV under the YOM will allow your 56 plates with a 62 sticker, given the numbers are not currently in use. They will not allow you to use your 63 plates with a 66 sticker as the YOM presently applies to vehicles up to the year 1962.
Darrel`s in PA restored a set of plates for me. It involved some dent removal as well as repaint. They took several months but the end result was very good.- Top

Re: License Plate Restore
Darryls has done several plates for me in the past and his work is museum quality. His wait time used to be 6 months but I am still waiting for a plate I sent to him and paid for last October. Its hard to believe but true. He tells me that he is now doing only hourly work as opposed to quoted price and his turn around time is 2 to 3 weeks. When compared to the restorer in Ct. his work is slightly better but from 5 feet away they both look great and you can't tell the difference. With Darryls new hourly policy I would imagine his prices will be up there and they weren't cheap to start with. I'd go to the services section of Hemmings and find the fellow in CT. and pay him a fair fixed price for a quality restoration. You will have it back in a couple of weeks. Darryls just doesn't handle the customer very well.- Top

Re: License Plate Restore
You might also look for a vendor who sells plates outright. I don't know what it is like in other states, but in Texas, you can buy a brand new set of plates still in the wrapper for about $100 depending on year. These plates will allways pass TXDOT approval since they are new, never used, plates and are not incumbered in any manner. I bought a set of plates for my 60, and had my choice of about 200 numbers. I suppose the real difference between Texas and other states is that they did not use stickers, so once the year passed, any tags left over were usless. This left many thousands of old, unissued tags collecting dust in the basment of countless courthouses awating the enterprising tag vendor! I have known persons who have spent major bucks to have tags restored only to find that the state they were in refused to allow that tag to be used. Allways get the tag approved before investing any money in the tag. This is one of the downsides of purchasing used tags, sometimes the state will disallow the tag for some reason and you are out the cost of the tag.
