I have recently bought a 67 Coupe with Air cond. I was having the system topped up today and noticed the POA valve is not like what I expected to see. The one I have seems to have an electrical pressure switch of sorts in the centre that is spliced into the wire going to the compressor. All information I have shows a much larger(fatter) valve with no electrical connections. Would this be an upgrade or retrofit of some sort? The air works very good.. is it worth going back to the original or do think it was replaced for a reason? Thank you in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Yes. I believe the POA valve has been replaced. I think the valve you now have may be a 134a retrofit valve. Check and see if your AC has been converted over (should be a blue cap on one or more of the charge fittings and possibly a sticker saying it was changed over). The switch is a clutch cycling switch driven off the pressure in the POA valve. Original systems ran all the time and suction pressure was soley controlled by the valve. these valves can also be used with R-12 so don't worry if you don't have 134a in the system. Anyways 12 is a much better refrigerant than 134a!
Later systems had these switches to better regulate suction-side pressure by cycling the clutch if the pressure changed too much. I think also this was done possibly for a wee bit more fuel economy (but that is just a hypothesis).
You should not have any issue with it. But it is not original and you would take a deduct on it. Hey, but if it blows cold, you are there! I wouldn't change a thing!
Hope this helps -

Re: C2- Air cond POA valve concern
Hi Pat. This is exactly what I was trying to learn. The system is R12 and I hope to maintain it as such. Other than the POA valve everthing is original. I'll probably bite the bullet and buy an original POA before I can't, just to have on hand if need be. Thank you very much. Glenn- Top

Re: C2- Air cond POA valve concern
Just to let you know, the upgrade that you have is a replacement for the POA
for your system. The original POA is not available as a replacement from any
supplier, only as a used or NOS part(which I doubt seriously is possible).
The replacement can be used for R12. I know about this issue because I went through this several years ago with a 69 Camaro. The problem which bothered me was that the cycling could be felt in terms of power loss. Perhaps you don't notice it however.- Top

Re: C2- Air cond POA valve concern
Just got fortunate and picked up an NOS POA valve off EBay. Not free mind you. I don't intend to change it but when/if resell time comes, I will put in in the system. I never noiced the power loss issue but you definatly know when it cycles. Glenn- Top
