    CASTROL HYPOY C GEAR OIL

I bought Castrol Hypoy C 80W-90 gear oil for my 1961 T-10 trans. The container has "Limited slip performance" on it. Is that what I should use? Thanks, Joe DeLuca #37862

Re: CASTROL HYPOY C GEAR OIL

In the past I've made the mistake of buying GL-5 gear oils that said "for conventional and limited slip differentials" or similar verbiage and thought it could could be used for the diff without additive, and that turned out NOT to be the case.

For the transmission, you do not want the limited slip additive. In the case of the Castrol brand you are looking at, chances are it does not have the additive, but you should probably check with the manufacturer to be sure.

The only GL-5 gear oil I know of that DOES have the limited slip additive is Redline 75W-90. They also have a version without the additive called 75W-90 NS.

      i.
,m mnot sure about using positraction addative gear oil in a tranny. think i'd wait till someone more lubricant knowledgable puts their 2 cents worth in the discussion.i personally like Mobile synthetric gear oil for trannys and rear ends. I've had two full size 1/2 ton pickups lunch their rear ends in the past from pulling a 10k trailer at excessive Interstate speeds. my current tow vehicle, a 94 3/4 ton with optional 1 ton rear has 55k miles since i bought it new and its been used exclusivly for towing vets etc to meets. i drained the factory gear oil when it was new and replaced with synthetic Mobile and 8 oz kwell posi add. . I routinly replace every 25k miles as the owners manual suggests and the old rear in the 94 has been trouble free. If you have a 1/2 ton or even the 3/4 ton base rear, strongly suggest you replace rear end grease every 25k if you do any towing. those rear ends get extremely hot pulling at70+ mph. i might also add that the 1/2 ton rear axle housings do not have a rear axle bearing race so if the rear axle bearing seizes, you are looking at replacing the entire rear axle housing. replace every 25k. mike
