I had a 232 coil (an extra...) roll off of the shelf and drop onto a concrete floor from about chest height. Made a pretty good dent in the bottom edge. I'm not sure what's inside, so is there a chance it's okay, or is it headed for the trash can?

Re: Dented coil
it probably survived the fall but its an easy test. just take the two wires off the coil in your vet and attach them to the damaged coil.Coils,as far as i know, folow the "all of none" theory--they either work or don't. mike- Top

Re: Dented coil
BOB: YOU ARE CORRECT, THEY ARE BATHED IN A OILY SUBSTANCE. ALWAYS WONDERED IF THEY CONTAINED TOXINS LIKE OLD TRANSFORMERS MADE IN THE 50S AND 60S. THE COIL CAN STILL FUNCTION IF CAN IS PUNCTURED BUT FOR HOW LONG, WHO KNOWS? IS THERE SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CAN REFRESH MY MEMORY AS TO THE CONTENTS(TOXIC) THAT THE EPA HAS PROBLEMS WITH IN OLD TRANSFORMERS? THANKS, MIKE- Top

Re: Dented coil *TL*
Mike,
PCB or Polychloride biphenyls are the chemicals that make transformer oil fire resistant. In my former life with the utility I learned way too much about them. Very nasty stuff. We may have some time to chat in a couple days about them.
I would bet that they are in automotive coils made before the '80s. Flourescent light ballists also. If your coil is leaking don't get the oil on your body.

Re: Dented coil
Very nasty stuff...a high carcinogen...when we moved to Tucson in 82 there were a bunch of wells on the south side of town polluted by Hughes aircraft and all kinds of lawsuits over it....PCB's are in most oil bathed transformers from the past...Craig- Top
