    C3 Chin Spoiler Mount Question

I have a -new to me- 72 coupe. It is a very original car, yet one of the bolts holding the front chin spoiler clearly has some body color paint on it. Am I correct in my thinking that there is no way this is correct??? The chin spoiler was installed after the paint shop - right ???

Yes, but if the factory touched up anything on the front of the car, it would received overspray. You'd be surprised how many trim parts on my original, untouched 72 have factory touch-up overspray on them.

    Leave the bolts alone.

When one looks at an (original) Corvette they all have some issues and with one bolt head painted it will be a mystery as to when it happened. Overspray on C-3's is common but where and when it happened is usally not known by anyone but original owners and they usally have a story. Fact or Fiction Lyle

The two nuts and bolts that go through the fiberglass spoiler that holds on the black plastic chin are originally installed with the nuts on the outside or facing forward. If your painted nut is installed that way then leave it that way' if not, clean off the nut and bolt and re-install correctly. They should be black oxide finish.

            Mike-----

With the nut installed forward as Bob Cook described, the spoiler nuts were usually originally painted body color on 68-72.

              Joe,
Exterior is not my strong suit, but every 1968-1972 I have seen has black bolts and nuts in this position.

Re: C3 Chin Spoiler Mount Question

The bolts and nuts are orientated correctly -facing forward. They are/were black oxide as far as I can tell. I can't come up with a scenerio where they were the factory would have normally done this. Anyway, next step is to look the whole thing over very carefully for masking lines. I believe this car is a bow tie candidate - 28K miles. The only non-original parts I can find are spark plug wires, distributor cap, exhaust, tires, shocks, 1 heater hose (but original clamps), battery and brake calipers. Everything else is original to the car.

                Thanks All!!!

                  Mike,

Where are you? It might be useful to have one of us look at your car.

On the flip side, you're welcome to check out my 72 at Hershey. Flight judging this year, Bowtie next.
