    C1 wcfb choke problem

took my car to a local cruise last night and the car started running like the choke was stuck. THis is a newly restored carb. When I got to the cruise, I opened the hood and found the small welch plug from the bottom of the choke housing lying on top of my intake manifold. I forced it back into the hole with my fingers and the car ran fine on the trip home. I read in the service manual that the disc must be an air tight fit. I don't want to remove the carb to attempt to reinstall the old disc which is deformed from the original installation. I have another rebuilt carb that has the choke housing on it. It looks like I can change out the entire housing simply by removing the two screws at the bottom and removing the clip that retains the rod to the choke shaft. Is it really as easy as that?

I have removed the housing from my spare wcfb. As a note, I saw a post in the archives that stated you can simply reinstall the welch plug with sealant. Any one care to comment? Does it work, what kind of sealant, how is it applied to the plug?

      Don,
I think I would look real close to Loctite Bearing Block Sealant. Possibly NAPA or a decent machinery supply store should have it. Regards,

do not get any sealant on the piston or the piston bore because this will cause the piston to stick and your choke pull off will not work. check the auto parts for a replacement expansion plug and install it by just tapping in on the convex surface to expand the outside diameter.

clem, I think it was your post in the archives that I saw about the sealant. Do you now suggest installation of a new plug instead of using a sealant to reinstall the old plug? Would the auto parts stores carry a welch plug for this old choke housing? I havn't seen it in any parts catalogs I have.

i have sealed them with non hardening perma tex by coating the edge of the plug and when they were missing i replaced them, but when i resealed them i had the piston out so i could make sure no sealer got into the chamber. you will have to measure the OD of you plug and check the auto parts. the orignal were aluminum but the autoparts ones will be steel or brass as i never found alumimum ones at the auto parts. if you still have the orignal i would do the sealer but be careful not to let the sealer get inside
