    1961 Body Color

    Hi all,
I wanted to pass along that during my interior refurbish which included the trunk area that I descovered the original markings from the factory designating the true color of my car. I was always somewhat leary of my white color due to so much red everywhere that I just figured it had repainted white. I knew that the factory used red primer but it just seemed to be everywhere. The white just didn't seem to be in area's where I thought it should have been. But when we scraped off some of the paint in the trunk area behind the divider panel there it was in bold letters "IVORY". I was so excited. I plan on leaving it exposed for all to see if there is ever any doubt. I am sorry to make this such a big deal but it's almost like discovering gold. Have a great day.
    Regards,

    Craig...

What excitement, I had to remove two layers of paint to locate the color of my 61, sure enough it was there "Fawn Beige". Now look for the Job number on the passenger door.

My 61 also has ivory written in the back trunk area. The car is painted Roman Red. I am in the process of stripping it. Does that mean it was Ermine White? Thanks, Joe DeLuca #37862

        Joe...

As you strip the roman red, there will places on the body that even the best painters did not catch to repaint, One example may be the steering column under the dash, These spots will comfirm the original paint color.

61-62 paint code was behind the passenger seat. Maybe ivory is the convertible top cover?? Sorry to burst your bubble Craig !!!

            Peter,
If that's the case how could they have possibly have known the top color after the car had been painted? I would assume the top color along with the interior selection color were part of the work order numbers found on the inside passenger door. I am certainly no expert but have read many articles that stated that the body color was in the trunk area. Thanks for the imput.

craig: on 61 and 62 vets, the exterior color was grease penciled on the bulkhead between the cockpit and trunk(trunk side) On the pre 61's, not counting the 57 back, the exterior color was penciled behind the pass side seat. as far as i know, the 57 back didn't have exterior color marked anywhere on the body but some of the 57's and possibly earlier c-1s had exterior color penciled on the front crossmember. not aware of any penciling anywhere on the car regarding interior color or soft top color. mike
