    '56 short block

What should a person expect to pay for a 1956 #991 short block with a rebuild approximately 5,000 miles ago?

Much will depend on the quality of the rebuild done 5000 miles ago.... Figure a scrapyard '56 265 'whole blood' builder motor goes for $300, then you're probably looking at a set of sleeves ($110 per hole) because anything this old has been sitting & rusting in peace for MANY years. Now, toss in something like $4000 for TOP quality, full race, machinest work (hold 0.1 grams tolerance in rotating + reciprocating balance and 0.1 mils tolerance on resizing rods, bearings, mild porting of the heads, Etc.) and kick in your assy labor + as-required parts for free and you've got a 'shadow cost' in the $4300-5180 range.

If you don't have the expertise to source the as-required parts and want a full turn-key job for a factory concours 'drop-in' motor (don't know if that's really what you're buying here--has it been judged?) then double the above guesstimate.

        Jack and Roy,
Thanks. Actually, let me rephrase my question. I have a friend that has a #991 short block and he has asked me to find out how much he should ask for it if he were to try and sell it. Care to give it a shot please? Thanks.

Bare or rebuildable blocks are available around here at swap meets for $100 to $200. The big engine rebuilders that advertise in Driveline ask about double that. I had a disassembled short block given to me a year ago (thanks again Steve) and have about $700 wrapped up in overhauling it.
