    If by now...

    you haven't caught the technical drift of the differences between a 'smart' electronic ignition system and a 'dumb' Kettering system, then take a shot at reviewing 'apples to apples' test data you presumed didn't exist....



    I think you'll find barrel dyno data on the same engine with a 'printed' Kettering ignition system and race quality points vs. the intelligent Breakerless SE electronic system. Plus, I'd venture a guess that if the test house had introduced a third variable (full GM native HEI) the Breakerless SE system would have met or exceeded its performance silhoutte.

    The appropriate use of modern technology 'can' have an impact....

    This is part of the info I was looking for Jack, thank you for taking the time to post it. I can now appreciate the differences between the M&H unit and the other generic breakerless units, in particular the units' ability to adjust dwell according to engine speed.

    Although neither magazine article makes much reference to some of the issues I was originally aiming towards (supposed better starting, improved idle, etc) I note that they did do a back to back dyno test with a properly set up points style distributor. Their findings of only a two horsepower max. increase (.5%) and one ft. lb increase in torque (.2%) does not support the contention that there are huge gains to be found and is certainly not anything the seat-of-the-pants driver will notice.
