    AC Fuel Pump Rebuild

I purchased a kit to rebuild my AC type 4657 pump. Tried to knock out the two valves with a rubber mallet and a socket, neither would budge. What am I missing here? Also had trouble removing the metal ring that holds the round rubber gasket in place (gasket that keeps engine oil out of pump body). The ring looks like it has been "micro" pinged in 4 places to hold it in. Easy fix would be to leave it in place, but wanted to use the new parts if possible.

How do I release the ring?

    Joe,

I just did my 4657 about a month ago. It sounds like you're on the right track. However, I used a small steel hammer, not a rubber mallet. Remember, you have to use enough force to push the old valve through the "staking" on the body of the pump. Even if the valves were not "staked", they probably are of a tight enough fit that they wouldn't dislodge themselves. I "restaked" mine after replacing them, just as a precaution. The "micro" pinging that you describe is what I'm refering to as "staking". I hope this helps.
