    need help w/ 76 bladder tank !!!

I dropped the tank on my 76 to replace the rubber hoses leading from the steel lines to the tank. While it was down I opened the tank to clean 27 years of accumulated crud and to replace the sock strainer. The rubber gasket under the flange of the sending unit/filler neck is too deteriorated to be reused. Bladder itself is in good condition. I cannot find a replacement gasket and it appears I may have to make a gasket. Has anyone done this before? Any guidelines as to thickness or type of material? 3/32", 1/8"? Also, what is the proper technique for attaching the new sock strainer? The old one was a tight friction/press fit and came off only after a gentle heating. Any input from persons who have encountered this situation before would be greatly appreciated.

    Mike----

You could make a gasket out of 1/8" nitrile or Buna-N sheet material. However, why bother? You can purchase one already made up from Dr. Rebuild. His part number is 3002221.

As far as the fuel strainer goes, heat might be ok to remove it, but I wouldn't use heat to install it lest you damage the sock material. I'd try to get it pressed on without the use of heat. It can be done. The strainer retainer is just rather thin fabricated sheet metal.

Joe, thanks very much for your timely response. I noticed that you responded within just a few minutes of my post. A couple more questions: the original tank had no "anti-squeak" under the straps and it seems this is correct. However, many of the catalog parts suppliers sell anti-squeak for use under the straps as well as under the tank. Is this necessary?

Also, the underside of the sending unit flange is a bit rusty. Do you think cleaning it will be sufficient or should it be coated with a sealer of some type?

        Mike-----

Your 76 should have the anti-squeak pads on both of the fuel tank support rails. I don't know why it doesn't have these. Perhaps, someone removed the tank earlier and omitted them. They are important and I would, definitely, install them.

As far as the rusted flange goes, if it cleans up with no significant pitting, then I think it will be fine to use as-is. Otherwise, a little sealer might be advisable. DON'T use silicone RTV, though; it's not impervious to gasoline.

Joe, with regard to the antisqueak between the tank and the support rails: they were definitely there and will be replaced. My thought was that there are antiqueak pads being sold for use between the straps and the top of the tank. Mine didn't have them.

Yes, there were no anti-squeak pads originally used between the straps and the top portion of the tank. However, I think that it would be a good idea to use such pads. Among other things, it would help prevent corrosion between the tank and the straps.
