    Pertronix Ignition Modules

Has anyone had experience with the Pertronix Ignitor breakerless ignition modules? They apparently have two versions of this module, designed to be used with your stock distributor, but replacing the points and condensor. One version of the Ignitor utilizes cobalt magnets, the other version utilizes a cam lobe sensor. Either way, my car still has it's original Delco-Remy "B-R 270" coil, which I hate to replace. Has anyone installed one of these Ignitor modules, while retaining their stock coil?

    Kevin,

I have a Pertronics two wire module in my 57 with a stock coil. It works great for me.

Thx Verle. Did you do a test on your coil, before installing the module, to see if it was producing 1.5 ohm or greater? And, since you utilized your stock coil, how did you hook up the "power" wire (the red wire) from the module. Pertronix claims you should not hook it directly to the coil, as in most cars with points distributors there is a resistance wire, but rather you should hook the "power" wire to another 12 volt source. Finally, do you know if your module is the magnet type, or the lobe sensor type?

Kevin I installed their IgnitorII and their Flame Thrower Coil. What a difference !! For example in Winter when I try and run the car for a minute or two with the garage doors cracked, before the installation the exhaust was so bad (because of poor burn) I had to leave the garage and let it air out for an half hour. Now the car can idle for minutes before I shut it off, with barely noticable exhaust fumes. What a difference !! And the accerleration is remarkably better!! I would recommend changing the coil also as that is really at the heart of my cars improvement. They have a black coil and the Flame Thrower sticker peels off to give the original appearence!! I have a 67' L79!! Good luck!! Mike Arteaga

Thank you all for your responses. Sounds like Pertronix has done something right. I still hate to replace my original coil, but...! There are other systems out there, and I have received some emails regarding a couple. Some seem to not require distributor removal.

          Thx,

            Pertronix & stock coils

I work summers for an early Mustang parts & restoration outfit, have sold bushels of Pertronix. Works perfectly with stock Ford coil. Ford's coil system is similar to GM, uses a resistance wire built into the main wiring.

              Kevin...

Once you make the change to the Pertronix system, the extra wire cannot be hidden; therefore changing to a new black painted coil will only improve performance for driving.

                Kevin,

I did not do a test on my coil.

Pertronix instructions call for red wire to be hooked to the 12 volt side of the ballast resister.

My module is the magnet type which is somewhat of a pain to install but it works well so far.

I have been well satisfied so far.

I installed a Mallory optical ignition module in my original owner 65 at least 15 years ago and have not touched it since.

I know people have had problems with electronic modules but I'm willing to take that chance for the better spark and lower (no?) maintenance.
