Has anyone installed an aftermarket distributor on a 71 454 with the ignition shield staying intact? I want to go aftermarket with an all new distributor (MSD) on this, but want my stock appearance. Any advice?

Re: 71 454 Distributor
There are some distributors, Mallory and Accell that come to mind that ust the same overall height and cap diameter as your OEM unit, and can be had with a tach drive. Another approach is to rebuild the existing dist, and retrofit it with a light pulse or mag-pulse amp conversion. Keeps the stock external appearance without sacrificing any performance.- Top

Re: 71 454 Distributor
Why not rebuild the original distributor and add MSD box and ignition coil. Does wonders for non HEI Corvettes. Picked up the idle on my wife's '72 about 300 RPM's with no other changes. You can trigger the MSD with the point type ignition if you so desire or change it over like "Clup" suggested.

Re: 71 454 Distributor
Mike,
I agree with Dick and Clup. I plan on installing an MSD box and coil later this year or over the winter on my 71 350/270, once the 72 project is done. E-mail me direct about how to hide it, if you want.
Otherwise, you could consider the Mallory electronic points conversion with a higher output coil, and not have to worry at all about where to put the box.
Also, did you get your carb yet?
