    C1 Radiator hose blows off

Hi, Have a new radiator, water pump, heater core. After car runs a while, around 180 (using an infared thermometer) and you turn off engine. The new lower radiator hose will pop off, using a corbin clamp, which i made tighter in a vise and a regular hose clamp it still pops off. Is the water pump or it"s neck bad? Please help with suggestions.

The lip or raised edge on the waterpump is probably worn or corroded off. If you paint the area of the waterpump that the hose slides over, the paint tends to react with the antifreeze and become greasy. This allows the hose to slide off even when the clamp is very tight. I will not allow any paint under any radiator hose for this reason. Hope this helps.

If the lip is gone and you have room, try double clamping it.

Try this trick. Clean the radiator and pump necks with lacquer thinner to remove any antifreeze or oil (don't soak it down). Clean the inside of the radiator hoses in the connection area the same way. Install with a single std. clamp and tighten normally. Let it sit halve an hour and retorque. This gives the surfaces a chance to conform.

Bill, I really don't think we are yet at the root of the problem. Although I'm new at the game, I've never experienced what you describe. May we assume the pressure cap is the correct PSI and is operating correctly? May we assume there is no combustion leak into the coolant system. This whole thing sounds fishy to me... Best, Dennis

I have tried new radiator caps,no coolant in oil. The only thing i can think of is the water pump neck is old and slippey? (redbuilt #'s pump) Help??? Bill

If the problem is the lip corroded off the pump you might try:

Use a non-hardening sealer on the neck of the pump. Let it get tacky and then slide you hose on and clamp it. The sealer will give the hose something to stick to.

If you don't want to look for another pump, you can weld a bead around the neck of your pump to build it back up. Of course the heat will probably destroy the seal in your pump and the cost of paying for the welding/grinding and installing a new seal may be more than a replacement pump.

I too am suspicious of this situation. The only time I had this happen to me is when I forgot to tighten a clamp one time.

Its way too nice of a car to screw around... If the lip on the pump is gone buy a new one and a new hose ...Has a over flow hose ,has that been dumping water that would answer a few questions.....

That's what 'd do, I'd buy everything new.

Don't fix anything, just buy it all new. Sorry, I can't help it. There was a time when I HAD to fix things, not just replace them with new. But, if your particular situation is running a surplus, I guess you can spend all you want or desire.

                  Yours truly,
                  Mike

Bill, You don't need coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. I'd warm it up to normal operating temp and check for any bubbles that might appear in the coolant. I always try to avoid the "shotgun" approach. It's expensive and you don't learn much. To put it another way, I've never had a radiator hose come loose as you describe in my lifetime of screwing w/cars - but I've only been working on them for about 40 years... Best, Dennis
