    1111076 Tach Drive Distributor

    The teeth on the main shaft gear and the tach drive gear were destroyed on my distributor when I first started the 65-restoration project. I purchased a new main shaft and tach gear and rebuilt the distributor. The engine now runs fine, but after a couple of days the tach quit. I finally pulled the distributor today and found the gears in the same destroyed condition.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for all the help!

    How much end play did you set up your distributor with when you rebuilt it?

      Check the bottom of the pocket where the tach crosshaft goes, often the small gear eats it's way into the housing and the resulting misalignment causes breakage.

        The endplay on the main shaft was set at .007. The pocket that the small tach drive gear set into seems to be fine. No burs and the bottom looked to be smooth and match the end of the tach drive gear, but with no base of knowledge my observation could be wrong. There is a small pin or machined post at the rear of the opening that the gear aligns to and it seems to fit the gear shaft and is in good condition.

        Thanks for the help!

          Ray;

          Why not retrofit your tach drive gear with the nylon/brass button used on 1968 and later models. This involves drilling a hole into your distributor housing and installing the thrust button. It will help keep your cross shaft better aligned, which should mitigate your problem.

            That "small machined pin or post" that you described was "machined" by the gear, itself, as it "bored into" the distributor housing. It's NOT supposed to be there. The fact that it is there indicates that the housing has been ground down by the length of the "pin".

            The best repair is going to be to drill the housing right at the center of the "pin" for a 3/16" hole. Then, install, the brass button manufactured by Hi-Tech Innovations and sold by many of the vendors. This will correct the problem.
