    C1 Steering Column

Can anyone suggest the best way to install a '56 steering column.
I have the rad out and the gen. and exhaust manifold off but I know it will be
    a tight fit.

    Re: C1 Steering Column

Bob: as you probably know , installing a steering col assembly in a 53-57 vet is a tricky proposition if the engine is already installed.I've always installed it BEFORE the engine goes back in. Have heard it can be done but haven't done it myself. Just be real careful not to damage the dash area where the col goes thru the lower dash panel. suggest you have a few buddies give you a hand .good seeing you at the farm and at hershey.egards, mike

      Robert,
I did this once years ago (engine was in) and need to do it again later this summer to repaint the column. Along with the shroud being removed, I think you've got everything off. Can't recall if I had the hood removed or not. Probably did. Do recall the Pitman arm was attached to the box.
Great time on the road tour and great time at the National as well. Regards,

        Bob,
Did this a 3 years ago on my 57 so I could rebuild the box. It is easier if the pitman is left off. Also, I had repainted the column and tried to protect from scratching. Used and old sock and masking tape over the column end that went thru the dash. Biggest problem was rotating the box when I got it up. Just lots of grunting, etc. Removing the rad, gen and exh manifold helped me. I still had to touch up the lower column when I got it installed.
        Not an impossible task.
        Good luck,
        Ted
